Funding for Assistive Technology 

The NDIS provides funding for Assistive Technology (AT), which includes items that can help a person with a disability to perform daily activities more easily. A suitable mattress that meets the participant’s specific needs, such as pressure-relieving features or adjustable functions, can be considered as assistive technology.

Support for Home Modifications

In some cases, a participant may require a specific type of mattress due to their disability, and this might necessitate modifications to their bed or sleeping arrangements. The NDIS can fund home modifications to ensure the participant’s living environment is suitable and safe, which could include provisions for the mattress.

Support Items in NDIS Plans 

When developing an NDIS plan, a participant and their planner will discuss the supports and services needed to achieve their goals. If a specialised mattress is necessary for the participant’s well-being, comfort, or specific medical requirements, it may be included as a support item in the plan. Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy Assessments

If a participant requires a specialised mattress due to their disability-related needs, an occupational therapist or physiotherapist can conduct an assessment to determine the most appropriate type of mattress. The cost of this assessment may also be covered by the NDIS.

It’s essential for participants to discuss their requirements and specific needs with their NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) during the planning process.
